U.S. Border Patrol officers were the first to respond to a call about a wreck in the 1600 block of Wueste Road on August 4, 2024.
Responding officers found a 71-year-old man with major injuries, according to Chula Vista Police.
The police department says the driver of the vehicle that hit the bicyclist was a Vista woman in her 30s. She was detained by U.S. Border Patrol officers and arrested for charges unrelated to the collision. Authorities say alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the pedestrian hit. However, the cause of the collision remains under investigation.
“Beautiful View” is the second-largest city in the San Diego metropolitan area, the seventh-largest city in Southern California, the fifteenth-largest city in the state of California, and the 82nd-largest city in the United States. The San Dieguito people, who lived primarily in the Otay Valley, were the first people to enjoy this beautiful view some 10,000 years ago.
Much more recently, in 2019, Chula Vista was the first city in California to be certified as a sanctuary city by the national non-profit “Welcoming America.” In December 2022, the “Welcoming City” designation was revoked due to concerns about its surveillance program. According to the group, the Chula Vista Police Department was sharing license plate reader data with ICE and CBP.
