On July 31, 2024, a 27-year-old man was struck by a pair of oncoming vehicles after he exited his disabled vehicle.
The collision occurred around 11:54 p.m. on I-8 eastbound, east of College Avenue, California Highway Patrol spokesperson Salvador Castro said in a news release.
According to Castro, the man pulled onto the right shoulder, apparently because his Honda Pilot was disabled. “Upon exiting the Honda, the driver failed to put the vehicle in park, and the Honda began to travel unoccupied towards the traffic lanes,” Castro said.
As the driver tried to get back in the Honda, he was struck by a Tesla 3 and Hyundai Sonata in the traffic lanes, according to CHP. These two drivers remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators. The Pilot driver was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators speculate that the man may have been under the influence of alcohol at the time.
This section of Interstate 8, which is near San Diego State University in the Del Cero neighborhood, was built in the 1960s and is in generally poor condition. The road’s condition may have contributed to the crash.
