Car Crash Kills Woman in Otay Mesa, San Diego County

For unknown reasons, a 27-year-old woman lost control of her vehicle, which barreled up an embankment and back onto the freeway, where it landed on its side.

The accident happened on August 7, 2024, on the ramp from westbound state Route 905 to northbound Interstate 5. The vehicle, a Toyota Corolla, veered to the right, went up a dirt embankment, overturned, and rolled side over the side back onto the roadway, CHP public affairs Officer Salvador Castro said. The driver, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected onto the roadway and died at the scene.

Investigators initially believed the accident was alcohol-related, but they ruled out substance impairment based on the evidence at the scene.

Otay Mesa, which is located near the Mexican border on the far edge of Greater San Diego, is one of two official border crossings in the San Diego area. This crossing includes a pedestrian bridge linked to Tijuana International Airport’s main terminal. In recent years, law enforcement officers have also discovered six underground smuggling tunnels in the Otay Mesa area.
