On November 12, 2024, a wrong-way driver on Interstate 5 caused a fireball collision that seriously injured two people.
The crash was reported around 8:16 p.m., just after the freeway’s interchange with State Route 56. Authorities say a white Toyota Prius was traveling southbound in the northbound lanes of I-5, south of Carmel Valley Road when the Prius crashed head-on with a gray Toyota RAV4.
At least one of the two vehicles involved then became engulfed in flames in the right-hand lane of I-5 North. The driver of the Prius, a 38-year-old man from Carlsbad, and the driver of the RAV4, a 37-year-old man, also from Carlsbad, were taken to the hospital with major injuries. CHP investigators believe that drugs and/or alcohol were a factor in this crash.
Large mixed-use development areas and one of the state’s finest golf courses, which hosted the U.S. Open in 2008 and 2021, dominate Torrey Pines.
The affluent community of nearly 7,000 people is bordered to the north by the city of Del Mar, to the south by La Jolla; to the east by Interstate 5, Carmel Valley, Torrey Hills, the Los Peñasquitos Canyon Reserve, and Mira Mesa; and to the west by La Jolla and the Pacific Ocean.
42% of the community is parks and open spaces, 24% is residential, 17% is transportation, 15% is industrial, 1% is schools, and 1% is commercial. Large area neighborhoods include Del Mar Terraces and the Del Mar Heights.
