College Area San Diego Hit-and-Run Driver Nearly Kills Two People

Shortly after midnight on November 4, 2023, a hit-and-run driver seriously injured two female pedestrians on the 5000 block of College Avenue.

According to the San Diego Police Department, the two pedestrians reportedly ran into the street before being struck by the vehicle. Emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene, transporting the injured individuals to a nearby hospital. A 20-year-old woman sustained a fractured left arm and a lacerated lung, while a 19-year-old woman suffered a lacerated liver. Both individuals are currently receiving medical treatment for their injuries.

Investigators believe that alcohol may have been a contributing factor in the crash. Authorities are actively searching for the driver involved and are seeking public assistance in locating the responsible vehicle.

The College Area is a residential community in the Mid-City region of San Diego, California, United States. It is dominated by San Diego State University (SDSU), after which the area is named. Several neighborhoods in the College Area were developed in the 1930s, with others becoming established in the post-war period.

The region also includes East Campus Medical Center at UC San Diego Health, a 306-bed acute care facility, and the College-Rolando branch of the San Diego Public Library.

One of the first area businesses, which opened in 1948, was a 900-car drive-in movie theater. The opening night films were Give My Regards to Broadway and The Kansan. The final two features in 1983 were The Dark Crystal and Dragonslayer.

Three neon drum majorettes wearing Indian headdresses from that drive-in theater are preserved in the Vons shopping center, which is in the same location as the demolished theater. One large one is preserved in the College Grove Shopping Center, which is further south on College Avenue in Oak Park.
