One person was killed, and two others seriously injured, when a vehicle careened off the road, hit a concrete pillar, and burst into flames.
The accident happened on August 16, 2024, near the intersection of Interstate 8 and Telegraph Canyon Road in Chula Vista.
One of the three occupants of the sedan, a 23-year-old Newark resident, died at the scene of the wreck, CHP public-affairs Officer Salvador Castro said.
Paramedics took an Oakland man, 24, who had been driving the car, and a second passenger, 50, to a hospital for treatment of serious injuries.
The cause of the accident was unclear, but intoxication was not believed to be a factor, Castro said.
Initially, there were questions over whether the motorist who died was ejected due to the crash or pulled from the Toyota by Good Samaritans.
Later, a witness reported that someone was still in the vehicle and trapped and that three rescuers were trying to push the vehicle out of the blocked lanes before first responders arrived.
Chula Vista, and most other parts of San Diego, was inhabited by the Kumeyaay before contact from the Spanish, who later claimed the area. In 1821, Chula Vista became part of the newly declared Mexican Empire, which reformed as the First Mexican Republic two years later. California became part of the United States in 1848 as a result of the Mexican-American War, and was admitted to the union as a state in 1850.
Founded in the early 19th century and incorporated in October 1911, Chula Vista has grown rapidly in recent decades. The city is home to the Chula Vista Elite Athlete Training Center, while popular tourist destinations include Sesame Place San Diego, North Island Credit Union Amphitheatre, Chula Vista Marina, and the Living Coast Discovery Center.
