Fleeing Hit-and-Run Suspect Killed in San Diego High-Speed Chase

A man is dead after he tried, and failed, to elude officers pursuing him on southbound Interstate 15 in South Park.

San Diego police said they were chasing a Toyota Prius suspected in a hit-and-run.

The crash occurred around 7:45 p.m. on August 20, 2024, as the Prius attempted to merge from southbound Interstate 15 to westbound state Route 94, CHP Sgt. Ray Schiednes said. The driver lost control and crashed into a guardrail.

The driver was hospitalized but later died at around 10 p.m., police said. There were no other occupants in the car.

A toxicology report is pending to determine if alcohol/and or drugs were a factor in the crash and the investigation is ongoing.
