Left Turn Motorcycle Crash in Oceanside, San Diego County

A serious motorcycle-on-vehicle collision shut down all eastbound and westbound lanes at Atlantic Avenue between Court Street and Lincoln Avenue on October 9, 2024.

According to police, a 63-year-old man riding a 2011 Harley Davidson was traveling eastbound on Atlantic Avenue when he was struck by a 2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee driven by a 58-year-old man. The driver of the Jeep, who was heading westbound, was attempting to make a left turn onto Lincoln Avenue when the crash occurred.

The motorcyclist sustained serious leg injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. The driver of the Jeep remained at the scene, and an investigation into the incident is ongoing.

Motorcyclists and other non-vehicle motorists, like scooter riders, are frequently out and about in Oceanside, mostly because of this town’s many attractions.

One such attraction, the 2,000-foot Oceanside Pier, is the longest wooden pier on the western United States coastline.

The pier was first built in 1888 at what is now Wisconsin Avenue. Four iterations of the pier were built and then destroyed by heavy storms. The current pier was built and formally opened to the public in September 1987 at a cost of $5 million.

The Junior Seau Pier Amphitheatre, which hosts numerous events throughout the year, is at the foot of the pier. The nearby Junior Seau Beach Community Center, also known as the Beach Recreation Center, is a 17,000-square feet facility that includes a gymnasium, meeting room, stage, and kitchen. The amphitheater and the community center were renamed posthumously in 2012 in honor of hometown football hero Junior Seau.

On April 25, 2024, a major fire broke out at the far end of the pier. Thanks to a quick evacuation, no one was hurt. However, portions of the pier continued to smolder into the following day. While acknowledging that the fire had not yet been declared under control, the city’s fire chief estimated at midday on April 26 that 90 percent of the pier was undamaged. Investigators determined that the fire started at the former Ruby’s Diner, a 1950s-style diner located at the end of the pier. The restaurant was undergoing remodeling at the time.

A $17 million rebuilding and renovation project should be completed by 2027, at which time the Oceanside Pier should reopen to the public.
