Multiple Vehicles Strike Pedestrian in San Diego’s South Bay

A woman is dead after a vehicle hit her in the area of Dairy Mart Road in San Ysidro on August 1, 2024.

According to California Highway Patrol, a female pedestrian was walking within traffic lanes near the Dairy Mart Road exit when she was struck by a white Ford Fusion. She was then struck again by an unknown vehicle, who then fled the area.

The pedestrian suffered catastrophic injuries and was pronounced dead by medical personnel at the scene, CHP said. An investigation into the incident is ongoing.

Due to the extreme force in these collisions, pedestrian accidents on freeways are nearly always fatal. If the impact speed is above 50mph, the pedestrian death rate is over 90 percent.

San Ysidro is immediately north of the U.S.-Mexico border in eastern Greater San Diego. It began as the Little Landers colony in 1908. Its founder, William Ellsworth Smythe, attracted settlers with the motto, “A little land and a living surely is better than desperate struggle and wealth possibly.” It later became a residential community and border town. San Ysidro was also the location of the 1984 McDonald’s massacre, during which a 41-year-old gunman killed twenty-one people.
