Possible Alcohol-Related Crash in San Diego’s Sorrento Valley

Several people were seriously injured in a head-on crash that occurred on August 4, 2024, in the Sorrento Valley area.

According to the San Diego Police Department, the incident occurred in the 6200 block of Carroll Road shortly before 1:30 p.m. A 26-year-old man was driving a 2020 Toyota 86 eastbound, and a 52-year-old man was driving a 2012 Toyota 4Runner westbound.

For reasons still under investigation, police said the driver of the Toyota 86 “did not properly negotiate the curve of the road” and crossed into the opposing lane of traffic, in turn, causing a head-on collision with the driver of the Toyota 4Runner.

The driver of the Toyota 86 sustained fractures to his legs, pelvic area, and left arm. The driver of the other vehicle sustained fractures to his spine, left ankle, and sternum.

Two passengers in the 4Runner were also injured. One sustained a fractured spine and internal bleeding, while the other had internal bleeding and fractured ribs.

Police confirmed that driving under the influence of drugs is suspected to be a determining factor in this head-on crash.

Originally, Sorrento Valley was an industrial park on the edge of the city. But when Interstate 5 expanded into the area in the 1970s, Sorrento Valley became a residential center, as well as a high-tech center, mostly because of its proximity to the University of California, San Diego. Today, it is part of the city’s Mira Mesa, Torrey Pines, and University community planning areas.
