One person died in a November 11, 2024, wreck in the area of the State Route 163 exit to Kearny Villa Road.
According to SDPD, a Toyota Highlander had been stopped at a red light and entered the intersection when it flipped green, intending to head northbound on Kearny Villa Road. The truck had been traveling southbound, aiming to turn onto SR-163.
According to SDPD, the Ford failed to stop its red light as the Highlander made its protected turn. The Ford then broadsided an SUV and impacted the traffic light post, SDPD said.
The driver of the Highlander, identified as a 66-year-old, sustained major injuries in the collision and was taken to a nearby hospital, where she was later pronounced dead. The condition of the Ford driver, described as a 49-year-old woman, is unknown.
Miramar was the home of the original Top Gun school featured in the 1986 film of the same name. Before that, Miramar was originally part of Scripps Ranch, founded by media mogul Edward W. Scripps. He named the home he built on the ranch Miramar in the 1890s after Archduke Maximilian’s castle Miramare in Trieste, Italy.
The name eventually became applied to the surrounding mesa. Loosely translated from Portuguese, Italian, or Spanish, it means “a view of the sea.”
Today, The Miramar submarket consists of approximately 14 million square feet of distribution, warehouse, office, and Miramar Road frontage retail-related space. Miramar is one of San Diego County’s most recognized real estate markets due in part to its central location, size, and traditional industrial characteristics. This market historically maintains one of the highest occupancy rates in the county. Occupancy rates usually average about 90 percent.
