A teenage driver struck and nearly killed two women in their 60s in an October 12, 2024, crash at the intersection of Rumex Lane and Park Village Road.
According to the San Diego Police Department, the incident occurred around 5:50 p.m. when an 18-year-old woman was driving a 2015 Honda Fit in the 8500 block of Rumex Lane.
Police said the driver made a turn onto westbound Park Village Road when she collided with two women, who were both in their 60s. The pedestrians, who were in a crosswalk, were walking from north to south at the time of the incident.
One of the victims sustained multiple brain bleeds, a skull fracture, a left collarbone fracture, multiple left rib fractures, bilateral lung contusions, a bruised left hip, and a scalp laceration. Police said her injuries were considered life-threatening.
The other victim sustained a minor brain bleed, a right humerus fracture, and abrasions to her knees. She is expected to recover.
PQ is named after Rancho Santa Maria de Los Peñasquitos (little cliffs), the first Mexican land grant in San Diego County.
Earlier, Native American Kumeyaay history within the area has been documented to 7,000 years ago. The area was home to a Kumeyaay settlement known to them as ‘Awil Nyawa’. Some remains of that prehistoric culture can still be found.
Subsequently, PQ was a way station on the wagon road from San Diego to Warner’s Ranch. From 1857 to 1860, it was a station on that road for the San Antonio-San Diego mail line between San Diego and Vallecito via San Pasqual, Santa Ysabel Asistencia, Warner’s, and Rancho Valle de San Felipe. The ranch operated until 1962 when real estate developer Irvin Kahn acquired the 14,000-acre parcel with the intent of building a 150,000-resident planned community.
In 1964, San Diego annexed most of the area, building out from Irvin Kahn’s community. Approximately 60,000 people live there today.
