San Diego Driver Slams into Utility Pole in La Quinta

Authorities believe a driver had a medical episode in the moments before a September 7, 2024 wreck that affected hundreds of area residents.

Over 1,300 customers lost power due to the September 7, 2024 wreck. Most of these customers were in the Cove area. Power was quickly restored to most, although several hundred people remained without power for several hours.

Police closed off several roads while they investigated the crash, but they did not make any arrests.

La Quinta, one of nine cities in the Coachella Valley, may be best known for its golf courses. They include La Quinta Resort and Club, which opened in 1926, where director Frank Capra wrote the screenplay for Lost Horizon, and SilverRock Golf Resort, a host golf courses for the annual Bob Hope Chrysler Classic PGA golf tournament.

That 1926 resort was the Coachella Valley’s first golf course, coinciding with the construction and pavement of State Route 111 in the 1930s. Further expansion of Washington Street in the 1950s and 1960s connected La Quinta with U.S. Highways 60 and 99, which became Interstate 10 in the 1970s.
