Serious Injury in Carlsbad Police High-Speed Chase

A driver is clinging to life in a local hospital after Carlsbad Police Department officers forced his car to tumble over a cliff during a pursuit in November 2024.

A police officer first saw the vehicle collide into a fence around 4 p.m. in the 2400 block of Impala Drive, where the chase began. The pursuit ended in the 5500 block of Carlsbad Boulevard, where the fleeing vehicle rolled off a cliff and onto the beach.

First responders took the driver, who suffered significant injuries, to the hospital. The driver is expected to survive despite sustaining life-threatening injuries, police said.

Carlsbad, a North County suburb known for its golf facilities, is also the home to three under-the-radar significant places.

The first modern skateboard park, Carlsbad Skatepark in Carlsbad, was built in March of 1976. It was located on the grounds of Carlsbad Raceway and was designed and built by inventors Jack Graham and John O’Malley. The skatepark was closed in 1979. Two smaller skateparks now occupy that space.

In March 1999, Legoland California was opened. It was the first Legoland theme park outside of Europe. The park quickly expanded, adding the country’s first KUKA RoboCoaster in 2005. Other expansions included Pirate Shores (2006), a Las Vegas-themed Miniland area (2007), the Egyptian explorer-themed Land of Adventure (2008), the Legoland Water Park (2010), and a 250-room resort hotel (2013).

Attendance at Legoland California reached 2.5 million visitors in 2013 and nearly 3 million by 2015, nearly double the attendance of Legoland Florida. More than $20 million was spent per year on sales tax on food and merchandise. The park employed more than 2200 workers in total: 600 full-time, nearly 500 part-time, and more than 1100 seasonal workers.

Carlsbad is also the home of the nation’s largest desalination plant. Construction of the Carlsbad Desalination Plant at the Encina Power Station was completed in December 2015.
