Vehicle Fatally Strikes 76-Year-Old San Marcos Woman

No arrests have been made after a driver hit a woman who was walking along a road in North County on September 7, 2024.

Deputies from the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office San Marcos Station responded to reports of a vehicle versus pedestrian accident at the intersection of South Twin Oaks Valley Road and Shubin Lane in the city of San Marcos. Deputies say a woman was driving on South Twin Oaks Valley Road in San Marcos Friday night when she hit a 76-year-old woman walking along the roadway.

The victim was taken to the Palomar Medical Center Trauma Unit for serious injuries, but later died at the hospital. The sheriff’s department says the driver of the car cooperated with the investigation and that alcohol was not a factor.

The tiny community, which was a whistle stop on the Santa Fe Railroad, grew significantly after 1956, when the first water from the Colorado River arrived. Several small businesses were founded and the population rapidly increased to 2,500. San Marcos became an incorporated city on January 28, 1963. In the 1970s, San Marcos was flourishing as the third fastest-growing city in the state. The population continued to boom during succeeding decades, surpassing 30,000 in 1990 and nearing 100,000 by 2020.
